Pilsen is the fourth largest city in the Czech Republic. Located in western Bohemia, it is an important centre for education, industry, commerce, culture and administration.
Pilsen is a city known mainly for its student life, beer, and industry. This is not surprising, as Pilsen provided the world with the famous golden lager (Pilsner), after which beers of the same type around the world are named. Thanks to its rich brewing tradition, visitors can take a tour of the Pilsner Urquell Brewery or visit the Brewery Museum. However, the city has many other attractions to offer. This city, which has a history spanning more than 700 years, is home to magnificent buildings in the historical centre, such as the Gothic Cathedral of St Bartholomew, the Renaissance City Hall, the Baroque reconstruction of the Archdeacon's House, the Franciscan Monastery and the recently reopened Great Synagogue of Pilsen. Pilsen will surprise visitors with its plentiful parks, gardens, and green spaces. There are several nature trails and protected areas within the city, while the pride of Pilsen is the unique ring of parks in the city centre. These days, visitors will not see a grey and tired city, but a modern, gleaming metropolis with plenty of attractions. It is no coincidence that this city won the title of European Capital of Culture of 2015.
